Listeners can discriminate among major chord positions.

چکیده
Listeners judged whether two sequentially presented major chords were the same. When both chords were based on the same root, listeners discriminated between different chord positions, e.g., root position, first inversion, second inversion. The ability of listeners to discriminate between chord positions suggests that harmonic equivalence of different chord positions does not depend on perceptual equivalence and instead arises from a more cognitive representation.

Processing of Musical Syntax Tonic versus Subdominant: An Event-related Potential Study
The present study investigates the effect of a change in syntactic-like musical function on event-related brain potentials (ERPs). Eight-chord piano sequences were presented to musically expert and novice listeners. Instructed to watch a movie and to ignore the musical sequences, the participants had to react when a chord was played with a different instrument than the piano. Participants were ...
متن کاملQuantification of the hierarchy of tonal functions within a diatonic context.
Listeners rated test tones falling in the octave range from middle to high C according to how well each completed a diatonic C major scale played in an adjacent octave just before the final test tone. Ratings were well explained in terms of three factors. The factors were distance in pitch height from the context tones, octave equivalence, and the following hierarchy of tonal functions: tonic t...
متن کاملKey distance effects on perceived harmonic structure in music.
Two experiments provide convergent evidence for the hypothesis that listeners interpret chords in terms of their harmonic functions in a system of interrelated keys. The perceived associations between chords undergo significant changes depending on the broader tonal framework in which they are embedded. Three independent context effects are identified, and their magnitude is found to be a syste...
متن کاملHarmonic relationships influence auditory brainstem encoding of chords.
The cortical processing of musical sounds is influenced by listeners' sensitivity to the structural regularities of music, and particularly by sensitivity to harmonic relationships. As subcortical and cortical processing dynamically interact to shape auditory perception in an experience-dependent manner, we asked whether subcortical processing of musical sounds would be sensitive to harmonic re...
متن کاملCombined Audio and Video Analysis for Guitar Chord Identification
This paper presents a multi-modal approach to automatically identifying guitar chords using audio and video of the performer. Chord identification is typically performed by analyzing the audio, using a chroma based feature to extract pitch class information, then identifying the chord with the appropriate label. Even if this method proves perfectly accurate, stringed instruments add extra ambig...
